What is a GST invoice?
A GST invoice (tax invoice) is the bill a GST-registered business issues when it sells goods or services. It records what was supplied, its value and the GST charged. Your customer needs it to claim input tax credit, and you report the same details in your GSTR-1 return.
What a GST tax invoice must include
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists the details a tax invoice must show. This generator has a field for each of them:
- Your name, address and GSTIN
- A unique invoice number of up to 16 characters (letters, numbers, hyphen or slash), in sequence for the financial year
- Invoice date
- Customer’s name, address and GSTIN if registered. For an unregistered customer and an invoice of ₹50,000 or more, the name, address and the delivery address with state name and code
- HSN code for goods or SAC code for services
- Description, quantity and unit
- Total value, and taxable value after any discount
- GST rate and amount, split into CGST and SGST/UTGST, or IGST
- Place of supply with state name, for inter-state supplies
- Delivery address if different from the billing address
- Whether tax is payable under reverse charge
- Signature or digital signature of the supplier or an authorised person
CGST and SGST or IGST?
The tax type depends on where your business is registered and the place of supply. The generator picks it automatically when you select the states.
| Supply | Tax charged | Example at 18% |
|---|---|---|
| Within the same state (intra-state) | CGST + SGST (UTGST in a union territory), half each | 9% CGST + 9% SGST |
| To another state (inter-state) | IGST | 18% IGST |
| Export outside India | IGST, or none if supplied under a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) | Zero-rated |
Example: a Faridabad (Haryana) business selling to a customer in Delhi charges IGST. The same sale to a customer in Gurugram (Haryana) is charged CGST and SGST.
Tax invoice vs bill of supply vs proforma invoice
| Document | Who issues it | GST shown |
|---|---|---|
| Tax invoice | Regular GST-registered businesses for taxable supplies | Yes |
| Bill of supply | Composition dealers, or any registered business for exempt supplies | No |
| Proforma invoice | Any business, as an advance quote before the actual sale | Shown, but it is not a tax invoice |
| Quotation | Any business, as a price offer | Optional |
A proforma invoice or quotation cannot be used to claim input tax credit. Issue a tax invoice when the supply actually takes place.
When to issue an invoice and how many copies
- Goods: issue the invoice before or at the time of removal or delivery. Prepare it in triplicate: original for the recipient, duplicate for the transporter and triplicate for the supplier.
- Services: issue it within 30 days of providing the service (45 days for banks, NBFCs and insurance companies). Two copies are enough: original for the recipient and duplicate for the supplier.
Pick the copy label in the “Copy” field, then download each copy.
Do you need an e-invoice?
If your aggregate turnover has exceeded ₹5 crore in any financial year since 2017-18, B2B invoices must be registered on the government Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) to get an IRN and QR code. An invoice from this tool does not carry an IRN, so such businesses should use it only for drafts, quotations or B2C bills. Ask us if you are unsure whether e-invoicing applies to you; our accounting and GST team can help.

Frequently asked questions
Is this GST invoice generator free?
Yes. It is free to use, there is no sign-up and no limit on the number of invoices. Everything is calculated in your browser.
Is a PDF invoice from this tool valid under GST?
Yes, as long as it contains all the details required by Rule 46 of the CGST Rules and is signed by you or an authorised person. If e-invoicing applies to your business, B2B invoices must also be registered on the Invoice Registration Portal to get an IRN.
Is my invoice data stored anywhere?
No. Your business details and the current invoice are saved only in your own browser on this device, so they are there next time you visit. Nothing is uploaded to our server. Untick Remember my business details to stop saving them.
How does the tool decide between CGST, SGST and IGST?
It compares your state with the place of supply. If both are the same, the GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. If they are different, the full amount is charged as IGST.
Can I create an invoice if I am not registered under GST?
Only GST-registered businesses can issue a tax invoice and collect GST. If you are not registered, you can still use the tool for a quotation or a simple bill by choosing 0% GST, but do not show a GSTIN or charge tax.
How many digits of HSN code should I show?
Businesses with aggregate turnover up to 5 crore rupees must show at least a 4-digit HSN code on B2B invoices, and those above 5 crore rupees must show a 6-digit code on all tax invoices. Use our HSN and SAC code finder to look up the code.
What does Rates include GST mean?
Tick it when the rates you enter already include GST, such as a shop’s MRP-based price. The tool then works backwards to find the taxable value and the GST inside each rate.
What is reverse charge on an invoice?
Under reverse charge, the buyer pays the GST to the government instead of the seller, for example on services from a goods transport agency or legal services from an advocate. Select Yes in Reverse charge and the invoice will carry a note saying tax is payable by the recipient.
Can I add my logo and bank details?
Yes. Upload your logo and add your bank account, IFSC and UPI ID. They appear on the invoice and are remembered on this device for your next invoice.
